One of my favorite parts of wedding photography is getting to know a couple. From the time I first communicate with a couple about the possibility of being their wedding photographer, to the time I meet with them, to the time I photograph the save the date portrait, to the time of their wedding, and all of the times in-between and after - it is about developing a relationship that will result in great wedding images.
I firmly believe that the first time a couple meets me should not be on their wedding day. I am a photographer that believes that getting to know what the client wants and needs from a wedding photographer is one of the most important connections I can make with a couple.
I have found that there is no one size fits all approach to wedding photography. I have photographed weddings that have varied in length from one hour to three days. Every couple I have met with approaches their wedding differently.
Some couples that meet with me have very definitive ideas of the types of photographs they want. They have specific poses or concepts in mind. They know the must-have images they want with friends or family. Sometimes they have an idea in mind right down to what steps to stand on at a particular location.
Other couples are less specific about the types of images that want or the poses they want. Some couples have even told me that they do not have any preference and that just wants me to photograph their wedding in the way I see fit.
Whether a couple has very specific ideas about heir wedding photography or whether the couple does not have any preferences it is about finding out what their needs and wants are. This means that the consultation process is critical to the wedding photography process.
As a photographer, this is one of the parts of the wedding photography process that I enjoy the most - talking about photography.
