      The Initial Wedding Consultation

The initial wedding consultation is one of the essential parts of the wedding photographer selection process. It is time for a couple and a photographer to get to know each other. It is an opportunity for a couple to express their wedding photography needs and wants and a time for the photographer to explain the services and their approach to wedding photography.

Most initial wedding consultations usually last about an hour in length. Before the current pandemic, initial wedding consultations were almost exclusively in-person meetings. Today is common to have an initial wedding consultation via videoconferencing.

Of course, initial telephone consultations still occur, and socially distant in-person consultations are now emerging. No matter what the method, the importance of the initial wedding consultation cannot be understated. Wedding Wire states that meeting in person with a potential wedding photographer is one of the essential tasks of How to Find a Wedding Photographer.

      Listening to the Couple

At the initial wedding consultation, I like to spend a lot of time listening to the couple. I want to hear about how they met. I want to know about their wedding plans. I want to know what they are looking for from a wedding photographer.

Is the couple having a traditional ceremony, or have they designed a unique ceremony? How do they envision their wedding day? What is most important to them when thinking about capturing cherished memories of their special day? These questions help me understand what needs to be photographed and how their special day should be photographed.

      Sharing my Approach

After listening to the couple and their needs, I will share my approach to wedding photography. First and foremost, I explain that I do not want their wedding day to be the first time they are in front of my camera. I include a “save the date” or engagement portrait sessions with all of my wedding packages. I want the couple to be comfortable with me as a photographer, so photography is a no-stress experience on their wedding day.

Of course, during the initial wedding consultation, I explain how I edit, process, and deliver all of the images. I share with the couple examples of wedding albums and fine art wedding portraits. I also explain some of the necessary elements about hiring a wedding photographer, such as the contract and payment schedules. There should be no surprises when the initial wedding consultation is concluded.

      Asking Questions

I also encourage couples to bring their questions to the initial wedding consultation. The Knot has a great list of Important Questions to Ask Wedding Photographers Before You Book, and it is a good starting point if you don’t know what questions to ask of potential wedding photographers.

      Feeling Comfortable

At the end of the initial wedding consultation, some couples are ready to proceed, and some couples want time to review all that was discussed. It is essential for a couple to feel comfortable about making the right wedding photographer decision. I want a couple to feel absolutely comfortable about hiring me as their wedding photographer.
